While the last 18 months have been a very challenging time for the tourism industry, for a local Mission Beach family the Read’s, it’s been even tougher. One minute 16 year old Tully High School student Tomika Read was kayaking, the next she was in an ambulance enroute to Tully Hospital when she became completely paralysed.

While the last 18 months have been a very challenging time for the tourism industry, for a local Mission Beach family the Read’s, it’s been even tougher. One minute 16 year old Tully High School student Tomika Read was kayaking, the next she was in an ambulance enroute to Tully Hospital when she became completely paralysed.
Doctors diagnosed Tomika with Transverse Myelitis (spinal cord lesion) and transferred her to Townsville Paediatric ICU before then moving her to the QLD Children’s Hospital to commence the long journey of spinal rehabilitation. Tomika is having to learn how to move and walk again with doctors indicating at this stage her recovery will take 12 months or longer, with no certainty of what her physical capabilities will be post rehabilitation.
The emotional and financial stress the Read family are going through is something many tourism operators can relate to but with no financial assistance available for the family, Adventure Cairns and its members are jumping in to help – locals supporting locals!
An epic fundraising day “Tully For Tomika” is being held in Tully on 27th November with Raging Thunder Tully River Rafting rafting trips being offered at 50% discount and all proceeds going directly to the family.
